Access to Archives: Pacific City Library
Tillamook County has a wonderfully rich history and fortunately, much of that history has been preserved by our local museums, libraries, two historical societies, organizations like the Pioneer Association and dedicated individuals throughout the county.
Today we are beginning a new series, Access to Archives, highlighting some of the places where you can explore the records, photographs, stories, and documents that help tell our county’s history. These collections can be wonderful resources for researching your family, community, school, church, business, organization, property, or local history.
Our first stop is the South Tillamook County archives, housed at the Pacific City Library.
This collection was started by Carol Johnson about 15 years ago and has grown into an impressive and beautifully cataloged local history resource. Just a sampling of subjects represented in the collection includes:
– Bay Ocean
– Cloverdale
– Churches, including St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
– Logging
– Neskowin Women’s Club
– Nestucca High School
– Pacific City
– Schools throughout South Tillamook County
– South Tillamook County photographs
– Local businesses and organizations
– Community and organization meeting minutes
And that is only a small portion of what is waiting on the shelves! They also have vertical files filled with S. information and a large photographic collection.
The archives are available for research whenever the Pacific City Library branch is open. If you would like a little help finding your way through the collection, you can usually find Carol at the library on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
You can also contact Carol at cfjohns@centurylink.org if you would like to set up an appointment with her.
Whether you are researching your family tree, looking into the history of a local business or organization, or simply curious about the community you call home, you might be surprised by what you discover in our local archives.
History is here and it is available for all of us to explore.
