Description
Paving the Way evaluates the early encounters between the Tillamook and foreign visitors. Each exploratory period between 1760 and 1851 had unique social and cross-cultural contacts. This contact laid the foundation for acceptance of later permanent settlers. The socialization that resulted from these encounters provided the Tillamook with context to form their own opinions on the incoming foreigners. Themes discussed in this research include socialization, kinship relations, fur trade society, intercultural diplomacy, children of multiheritage, and Euro-American society’s expectations and influence.
